Mazel tov to Professor Ben Nathans for being named the Alan Kors Term Associate Professor of History

Benjamin Nathans, associate professor of history, has been named Alan Charles Kors Term Associate Professor of History. Dr. Nathans specializes in imperial Russia and the Soviet Union, modern European Jewish history and the history of human rights. His book, Beyond the Pale: The Jewish Encounter With Late Imperial Russia, won the Koret Jewish Book Award; the Vucinich Prize in Russian, Eurasian and East European Studies; the Lincoln Prize in Russian History; and was a finalist for the National Jewish Book Award in History. The recipient of fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, Dr. Nathans is currently on leave, having served as a fellow of the Shelby Cullom Davis Center at Princeton University in the fall and currently serving as senior fellow of the Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies in Germany. He is working on a book, To the Success of Our Hopeless Cause: A History of the Soviet Dissident Movement, as well as a translation from Russian of Simon Dubnov’s memoir The Book of Life.
The Alan Charles Kors Endowed Term Professorship was established by George H. Walker (C’91, W’91, WG’92) to recognize Dr. Kors, the Henry Charles Lea Professor Emeritus of History. Mr. Walker, who was a student of Dr. Kors, is the chairman and CEO of Neuberger Berman. He is also a former member of the Penn Arts & Sciences’ Board of Overseers.
