Transcending Trauma: How the Study of Holocaust Survivor Families Sheds Light on the Challenges Faced by Today’s American Military Families

This Yom HaShoah commemorative event will explore ways in which the study of Holocaust survivor families, and their ability to rebuild after complete devastation, sheds light on the challenges faced by today's returning American war veterans. The horrors of the Holocaust can, in no way, be compared to military service, but the challenge to rebuild after trauma is an experience common to both survivors and veterans.

Dr. Bea Hollander-Goldfein is the Director of the Post Graduate Certificate Program in Marriage and Family Therapy at the Council for Relationships. She is also Director of the Transcending Trauma Project - which, for over twenty years, has conducted qualitative research on coping and adaptation after extreme trauma.

Dr. Richard Ross is a member of the Department of Psychiatry of the Perelman School of Medicine and a physician on the PTSD Clinical Team at the Philadelphia VA Medical Center.
