Born in Leningrad to Russian-Jewish parents who were members of an illegal Zionist organization, Vertlib emigrated with his family In 1971, spending time in Israel, the Netherlands, the USA, Italy, and ultimately, Austria. His realistic narratives and clear, unpretentious language tell the history of 20th century Russian Jews through individual stories.
