As many of you may have heard, David Stern has been offered a professorship at Harvard University, where he will begin teaching next fall. In keeping with this year’s theme on historiography, we’re thus adding a special PSCO session reflecting on the impact of his scholarship on and beyond Midrash, especially during his time here at Penn; speakers will include Martha Himmelfarb (Princeton) and Azzan Yadin-Israel (Rutgers).

David is leaving Penn after 25 years here, during which--among many many many other things--he has been a engaged member of our PSCO community, reminding us constantly of the need for scholars of the NT and early Christianity to attend to insights from Rabbinic and other Jewish biblical interpretation (and, more recently, also the history and materiality of the Jewish book), while modeling what it means to be a brilliant and careful reader of texts of all times and types. We would be delighted if you could join us for this special session reflecting on how his work has sparked significant shifts in the study of Rabbinic literature, Jewish and Christian biblical interpretation, midrash and theory, and diverse other topics during his time here at Penn.
