Philip Roth is among the world's most highly regarded writers, if also one of its most controversial and Jewishly preoccupied. Steven J. Zipperstein's last book, Pogrom: Kishinev and the Tilt of History (Liveright, WW Norton, 2018), was widely reviewed and named a book of the year by The Economist and shortlisted for the National Jewish Book Award as well as the Mark Lytton Prize for the best non-fiction work of 2018. He has just started writing a biographical study of Roth for Yale's Jewish Lives based on extensive archival research, interviews with close friends and others as well as conversations with Roth over the course of several years. Steven J. Zipperstein is the author and editor of nine books, including Elusive Prophet:  Ahad Ha'am and the Origins of Zionism (1993) and Rosenfeld's Lives: Fame, Oblivion and the Furies of Writing (2009). He is the Daniel E. Koshland Professor in Jewish Culture and History at Stanford University.
