Meltzer Intern event: "Traditsye!: In Conversation with Motl Didner, Associate Director of Fiddler on the Roof in Yiddish”

Apr 2, 2019 at | 440 Williams Hall, 255 S. 36th St., Philadelphia, PA 19104

Fidler Afn Dakh, the Yiddish-language adaptation of the beloved musical Fiddler on the Roof, directed by Joel Grey, premiered at the National Yiddish Theatre Folksbiene in July of 2018. Soon after its premiere, it was clear that something special had been created. The musical’s run was extended three times before it was subsequently transferred to a 499-seat theater on 42nd Street early this year. The production of Fidler Afn Dakh is bringing a vibrance to New York that is creating a buzz throughout Broadway and beyond.

Speaking at Penn about the Folksbiene and its runaway hit is Motl Didner. Didner is the Associate Artistic Director of the Folksbiene and the Associate Director and Supertitle Designer of Fidler Afn Dakh. Additionally, Didner oversees the Folksbiene’s Outreach and Education program, which include Yiddish language and performing arts classes and workshops for children and adults. Through this lecture, we will be given an inside look into the Folksbiene, the creation of Fidler Afn Dakh, and what it takes to produce Yiddish theatre today.

Sponsored by Penn's Jewish Studies Meltzer Internship Program (organized by undergraduates Dylan Seders Hoffman and Justin Greenman).
